Bishop's Stortford Bank Holiday: What's On, 29 to 31 Aug

Four events are booked in and around Bishop’s Stortford over the August bank holiday, from a three day festival on a fruit farm to a free jam night at South Mill Arts. Two of them need tickets in advance.

Everything below comes from the organisers’ own pages, checked on 26 August. Where a listing and a ticket page disagree, we say so, because turning up on the wrong day is the one mistake nobody can fix on the door.

Cammas Fest, Saturday to Monday

The biggest thing on is at Cammas Hall Farm, Needham Green, Hatfield Broad Oak, CM22 7JT, a few miles east of the town. It runs across all three days.

• Saturday 29 August, 11am to 5pm
• Sunday 30 August, 11am to 6pm
• Monday 31 August, 11am to 5pm

Tickets are £6.95 for adults and £3.50 for under 18s. Under 2s go free. The organiser says pre-booking is essential.

One thing to know if you booked early. The town council’s listing still shows a different act in Saturday’s 12.30pm slot. The farm’s own booking page, which is where you buy the ticket, lists Scarlet Christina.

Last orders at the bar are 4.15pm on Saturday and Monday, 5.30pm on Sunday.

For children there are wandering princesses each day, Ariel and Rapunzel on Saturday and Sunday and Stitch and Rapunzel on Monday, baby dinosaurs throughout, and an outdoor games area with go karts and sling shots. Diggers carry an additional charge.

Three practical points the listing sites tend to drop:

• Well behaved dogs are welcome.
• Your festival ticket does not include the pick your own fields. That needs a separate booking.
• No picnics. Only food and drink bought on the premises may be consumed on site.

Reggae at the Rose & Crown, Saturday

Stortford Dub Club brings Apex HiFi down from Cambridge for an all day outdoor soundsystem session at The Rose & Crown, 16 Station Road, CM23 3BL, on Saturday 29 August from 2pm to 10pm.

Tickets are £7.00 to £10.00 including the booking fee, through TicketSource. It is outdoors with marquee cover if the weather turns, and the organisers list Caribbean food and a jerk BBQ with vegan, vegetarian and meat options, plus vinyl, CD and clothing stalls. It is child and dog friendly.

Apex HiFi, formerly Revelation 2000 and King Revelation, is a community run reggae and dub soundsystem that has been going for 26 years. This is its second visit to Bishop’s Stortford.

Stortford Sessions at the Half Moon: check the date

This one carries a conflict worth flagging.

The town council’s What’s On listing gives the Stortford Sessions Summer Party as Saturday 29 August, 4pm to 10pm. The organiser’s own Eventbrite page gives Sunday 30 August, 4pm to 10pm, with doors at 3.30pm.

Go by the ticket page, and check with the organiser if you have already booked. The venue is The Half Moon, 31 North Street, CM23 2LD. Tickets are £6.18 including fees and the listed refund policy is no refunds. The headliner is Face For Radio, with acoustic acts and DJs from Hoodoo Radio through the afternoon and evening.

Moon Jammers, Sunday, free

South Mill Arts runs Moon Jammers on the last Sunday of every month, which this month is Sunday 30 August. It starts at 7.30pm and entry is free.

It is a jam night for blues, soul and funk players, with a full backline provided by a seven piece house band. Players and listeners are both welcome. The venue asks you to let it know you are coming.

Getting there, and what it costs

Parking is at its cheapest of the week. East Herts Council’s Sunday and bank holiday tariff applies on both Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August: £1.70 all day at Northgate End multi-storey, £2.10 all day at its other Bishop’s Stortford car parks, chargeable 07:30 to 20:00. Blue Badge holders park free for up to three hours. Saturday is a normal charging day, and a market day.

The roads are as clear as they get. National Highways lists no closures at all on the M11, on the M25 between junctions 25 and 26, or on the A120 from Friday night onwards. Across the whole national network its count falls from 226 closures on Wednesday night to 13 on Sunday.

Trains run normally on Saturday and Sunday. Greater Anglia’s own service alterations calendar lists no engineering work on the West Anglia main line on either day, so Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth and the Stansted Express are to timetable. From the night of Monday 31 August to Thursday 3 September, track work between Cambridge Heath and Cheshunt sends Stansted Express and West Anglia services via Tottenham Hale instead of Seven Sisters, between 23:35 and 05:15. If you are coming home very late on the Monday, check before you travel.

Bins are the one thing nobody will tell you. East Herts Council’s bin collection pages carry no bank holiday statement at all, and its collection day lookup asks you to sign in. Check your own collection day rather than assuming Monday is moved.

What it means for you

Book Cammas Fest and the Rose & Crown before Saturday morning. Both are ticketed in advance and Cammas Hall says booking is essential.

Take the free option seriously: Moon Jammers costs nothing and starts at 7.30pm on Sunday, which is late enough to do something else first.

If you are driving in on Sunday or Monday, use Northgate End. At £1.70 for the whole day it is the cheapest parking in the town centre, and it is the only multi-storey.
