The Coach & Horses at Thorley (£97.50) and the Three Horseshoes at Spellbrook (£90) are the nearest country pubs, and Down Hall at Hatfield Heath is the formal option at £199.
All eight hold a food hygiene rating of 5, the top score. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and most of these want a deposit, and full payment by 30 November or 1 December. The last three entries are festive menus served on other days in December, for anyone who wants a Christmas dinner before the day.

1. The Harvest Moon, Friedberg Avenue
The Harvest Moon is the Greene King pub on Friedberg Avenue, Bishop’s Stortford. Its Christmas Day page offers three courses for £66, the lowest Christmas Day price in this guide.
Mains are hand-carved roast turkey with a pig in blanket and Yorkshire pudding, a duo of salmon and Black Tiger prawns, a cranberry-glazed nut roast (a vegan version is available), a 28-day aged sirloin with prawns and béarnaise, and a cheddar and leek tart. There is a separate kids’ Christmas Day menu.
Pre-orders opened on 21 October, and after 18 December the pub asks people to phone for any last tables.

2. The Coach & Horses, Thorley Street
The Coach & Horses is the McMullen pub on Thorley Street, on the A1184 at the southern edge of town, in a Grade II listed building (listed in 1985). McMullen’s page for the pub mentions its “compartmental dining areas, roaring fire, and sun worshipping conservatory”.
The Christmas Day menu is three courses for £97.50, with starters such as pan-seared scallops and beef carpaccio, then roast turkey and beer-baked ham, beef fillet Rossini, a duo of duck, lamb sirloin, stone bass or a vegan butternut squash, and tea or coffee with truffles to finish. Children 12 and under eat half price (£48.75) or choose from a children’s Christmas menu.
The pub serves Christmas Day dining only, from 11.30am to 4pm.

3. The Three Horseshoes, Spellbrook
The Three Horseshoes is the Chef & Brewer pub on Spellbrook Lane East, just off the A1184 between Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. Its Christmas Day page offers three courses for £90 a person.
Mains are hand-carved roast turkey, slow-cooked beef cheeks, a duo of seafood, St Clement’s glazed lamb rump, a cheddar and leek tart, and a roasted squash and sweet potato tart. There is a separate young guests’ Christmas Day menu and a menu without gluten-containing ingredients.

4. Down Hall Hotel, Spa and Estate, Hatfield Heath
Down Hall is the country house hotel off Matching Road at Hatfield Heath. Its Christmas Day lunch page offers a three-course Christmas meal “perfectly complemented by the soothing sounds of our talented live pianist”, and suggests a winter walk around the estate grounds first.
It is the most expensive Christmas Day in this guide: £199 an adult and £99 for children 12 and under, with an optional cheese board at £17.50 a person. Lunch is served from 12pm to 3pm.

5. The Green Man, Old Harlow
The Green Man is the Chef & Brewer pub on Mulberry Green in Old Harlow, south of Sawbridgeworth. Its Christmas Day page offers three courses for £90 a person, the same menu as the Three Horseshoes at Spellbrook: starters include hot smoked salmon and prawn cocktail, a Croxton Manor cheese soufflé, minestrone (vegan option) and chicken liver and brandy pâté, then turkey, beef cheeks, seafood, lamb rump or one of two vegetarian tarts.

The Feathers is the Chef & Brewer pub at 49 Cambridge Road in Wadesmill, on the A1170 just north of Ware. Its Christmas Day page offers three courses for £86 a person, £4 less than the same company’s pubs at Spellbrook and Old Harlow.

7. The Dog’s Head, Market Square
The Dog’s Head is the McMullen pub at 18 Market Square, in the middle of town. It is closed on Christmas Day, but its Christmas page promises “the vibes, the tunes and the drinks” for parties, with a festive menu served from 1 November, every day except 25 December.
It is the cheapest Christmas dinner in this guide: £26.50 for two courses or £30.50 for three, with roast turkey, a turkey, cranberry and chestnut pie, baked sea bass, a festive burger or a vegan parsnip and cranberry roast. Children 12 and under eat half price.
On Christmas Eve the kitchen serves from 12pm to 8pm.

8. The Coach & Horses, Thorley: festive menu
Alongside its Christmas Day menu, the Coach & Horses serves a festive menu from 1 November, every day except 25 December: £36 for two courses or £40 for three, with roast turkey, pan-seared salmon or a vegan roasted parsnip nut loaf among the mains. The deposit is £5 a person and children 12 and under eat half price.
Book in November and the lead booker gets a glass of Prosecco, the pub’s page says.

9. The Cock Inn, Henham
The Cock Inn is the village pub on Church Street in Henham, north of Stansted. Its Christmas festive party menu for 2026 runs from 2 to 23 December, Wednesday to Saturday, at £36 for two courses or £42 for three.
Mains are butter-roast turkey with sage and cranberry stuffing and duck-fat roast potatoes, a ham hock and wild mushroom wellington, herb-crusted green-lipped mussels, or a vegan root vegetable and nut roast. The menu is by pre-order only, sent in at least seven days before the booking.
The pub’s own site does not say whether it opens on Christmas Day.
